education and learning both are the key of advancement. for college education it becomes more critical to choose the right course and right way of learning.


lots of students want to take up a college degree but unfortunately they are unable to do so for a number of reasons. for their continuious education, distance education play a key role. distance learnining programmes are more attractive due to freedom of selection of subjects choice, appear in examinations without the stress of competition with others, makes convenience for those unable to attend the regular courses.


it is most suitable for working students and for them who missed the opportunities of attaining regular higher education due to economic and social constraints. distance education programmes are cost effective and are called "classroom without walls".

it provide access to learning when the information source and the learners are separated by distance and time. it is a three-way partnership among student, faculty member and technology. validity of the degree availed through distance is the same as a regular degree course.

now days various terms used for distance learning are open education, open learning, distance education etc. learning is imparted through postal or correspondence courses, electronics media like video, audio, radio, television, cassettes, contact etc. and other audio - visual aids.
correspondence education offering institutes provides various study material to students in printed course, by personal contact classes through online medium at study centers or at university campus, they conduct examinations.

student does not have a direct contact with the teacher, they can use various modes to access education, like video conferencing, e-mail, e-learning etc. they need not to attend the regular classes, evaluation is done through tests organized at regular intervals.
most of the university has a department of distance education like annamalai university, jamia hamdard, delhi university school of open learning, osmania university, kurukshetra university and so more others.

open universities only offer distance learning programs for students. open universities offer flexible course options, the procedure of admission are also simpler than those offered by regular universities. open universities are nearly present in every state and offer diploma and certificate courses, graduation, postgraduation, m phil and phd courses in a variety of subjects from sciences, commerce, history, economics, business management, journalism, computers, law, library science, biotechnology, agriculture and so on. name of some open universities are ignou, dr. b.r. ambedkar open university, yashwantrao chavan maharashtra open university, nashik, tamil nadu open university, nalanda open university etc.

private universities are also offering distance learning programmes in tie up with with foreign universities in areas of student exposure programme, curriculum development and even faculty exchange programme. some of the private universities offering distance learning programmes are icfai, manipal university, sikkim manipal university, symbiosis center for distance learning, amity university and others.
massive open online course (mooc) are also offered to be in approach of unlimited participation and open access through web. in this mode they provide course materials in form of problem sets, filmed lectures, interactive user forums etc.

the edx website, that founded by harvard university and mit are providers of mooc. they offer even advance courses of engineering, psychology, computer science, languages, electronics, biology, marketing and so on.

distance education programme offers flexibility of admission,and time. they do not restrict candidate admission on the basis of age. education is economically viable for candidates even easily available for those who live in a geographically challenged area. student can learn while work or learn while earn and can upgrade their skills continuously.
